Text Box: Chariton Valley Planning and Development has received from the Iowa Secretary of State’s office the official trademark filing for the name Historic Hillstm. 
Historic Hillstm is the name used to 
refer to the nine southern Iowa counties that have worked together to promote the region as a destination area. 

The Historic Hillstm logo received trademark protection in August of 2005. The logo depicts the southern Iowa countryside with rolling hills, a pond, row crop, and trees in an oval shape.
Text Box: As part of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s United We Ride Coordination Project, Chariton Valley  Transportation Planning Affiliation (CVTPA) will host one of 15 workshops to be held throughout the state during 2006. 

The June 19 workshop is co-sponsored by the Iowa DOT and Iowa Transportation Coordination Council and is funded by the Federal Transit Authority.
Text Box: The aim of the workshop is to improve transportation services. 

Interested persons who want to take a role in making a difference in the quality of life, mobility, freedom, and independence of their local citizens should attend the workshop. 

The workshop is free, however pre-registration is required and lunch is provided to those who attend.

MEETING AND MANAGING CHANGE

Central Iowa Tourism Region update

· Chariton Valley Planning & Development Community Development Planner, John McCurdy joined more than 200 tourism advocates from around the state for Tourism Unity Day—an annual event held recently in Des Moines. McCurdy’s participation in the event was made possible by Central Iowa Tourism Region (CITR) who provided scholarship funds to cover registration. 

· CITR Executive Director, Ann Vogelbacher, attended a Historic Hills Advisory Committee meeting in Albia May 16. Advisory committee members provided Volgelbacher with an overview of recent Historic Hills activities. Also in attendance at the meeting was Dan Canney with the Ottumwa Courier, who is working with the group to develop tourism materials.

· Chariton Valley Plannning & Development staff will attend the annual meeting of CITR in Des Moines, Wednesday May 24. The event, which will be held at the Blank Park Zoo, provides the opportunity to review previously completed activities and to plan future committees.

· If the property is not presently listed on the Register and is more than 50 years old, you may contact the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department of Cultural Affairs manages the Historic Site Preservation Grants programs

If you think your older home holds historic significance and want to learn if it qualifies for grant monies, the following guidelines may help you determine if your home is eligible.

· First, in order to be eligible for historic preservation grants, your property must be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To determine if

Incorporated in May 2004, Chariton Valley Planning and Development will conduct business as a 501(c)3
corporation for the purpose of enhancing economic prosperity and planned growth in order to improve
quality of life in Appanoose, Lucas, Monroe, Wayne and contiguous counties in the State of Iowa. Primary activities will serve to stimulate and support: job creation; business investment; attraction and
retention of a skilled workforce;
quality of life, recreation, and cultural enhancements; provide for
infrastructure installation and maintenance.

Historic Preservation

Chariton Valley Planning and Development will sponsor a series of lunch meetings to encourage greater public participation in the update of the Appanoose County Comprehensive Plan.

Each meeting will cover a specific topic and the public feedback gathered will be used to prepare the draft plan that will be
presented in July to the Appanoose County
Supervisors to review.

Chariton Valley Planning & Development to host planning luncheons

Benefits of becoming a certified Cultural District

The benefits are many for those who apply for and receive
Cultural District certification. According to the Iowa Department of Cultural
Affairs, the benefits may include historic tax credits for rehabilitation of historic structures or other incentives which create live/work space for cultural workers, space for cultural and entertainment enterprises and access financial assistance programs from state agencies and other funding partners. The Iowa Department of
Cultural Affairs issues Cultural District certifications on an annual basis. The 2006 deadline is September 1.
